Traveling with a Dog or Cat: The Ultimate Guide to Pet Travel

Four-Legged Adventure

Traveling with a pet is incredibly fun but also a big responsibility. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a trip across Europe, your pet needs proper preparation. Here is everything you need to know for a safe and stress-free journey.

1. Formalities and Documents (EU and Beyond)

  • Pet Passport: Issued by an authorized vet. It contains owner data and vaccination records.
  • Microchip: The pet must be permanently identified. The chip number must match the passport entry.
  • Rabies Vaccination: This is a must. Remember, the vaccination is only valid 21 days after the primary dose.
  • Parasite Prevention: Some countries require additional deworming treatments recorded shortly before entry.

2. Car Safety

Pets should never roam freely in the car. It’s dangerous for them and you in case of sudden braking.

  • For Dogs: Use special harnesses that clip into seatbelts or a certified travel crate in the trunk.
  • For Cats: Always use a carrier, preferably secured with a seatbelt on the back seat.

3. Packing List

  • Familiar food and a travel bowl.
  • Plenty of water.
  • First aid kit: Tick removers, antiseptic, and any regular medications.
  • A favorite blanket – the familiar scent helps the pet settle in.

4. Stops and Logistics

Take breaks every 2-3 hours for water and short walks. iPhone users can use the Travel Rules app to find parks and green areas nearby, perfect for letting your dog stretch its legs away from highway fumes.

5. Warnings

Never leave your pet in a locked car! Even at 20°C outside, the interior can become a death trap within minutes. Also, consult a vet if your pet suffers from motion sickness.
